The Anna Lindh Foundation seeks to improve the dialogue between cultures around the Mediterranean. The Foundation developed a new scientific tool to help monitor and analyze intercultural trends and values, providing proposals and recommendations for their rapprochement through periodic reports. On 15 September they will launch the 2010 edition of the Anna Lindh Report and they will be with us in Brussels to share their latest findings.

At the same time, we hope to use this unique opportunity to provoke a critical discussion on: Is there a place for inter-cultural dialogue or are we still riddled by notions such as “clash of cultures”? What are the similarities and differences in values on the two shores of the Mediterranean? What is the meaning of the broadly used term “intercultural dialogue”? What are the limitations of intercultural dialogues? Are there concrete mechanisms to translate these provisions into practice and to evaluate the effectiveness of these initiatives?

To discuss these questions the EuroArab Forum has the honour to invite you to the debate:

2-4/7/2010

The Mediterranean Citizens’ Assembly (MCA) organized the first assembly entitled «Mediterranean Dialogues: Institutions and Citizenship in the Mediterranean » that will take place on the 2, 3, and 4th of July 2010 in Valencia, Spain.

The Mediterranean Citizens’ Assembly (MCA) is conceived as a space for an ongoing dialogue between the societies - with all their components – of the Mediterranean basin. It is a long term process that brings together different actors of society - citizens' movements, public institutions and private companies, associations, unions, experts, universities, research centers, etc...

It is based on the work of circles of citizens around the Mediterranean basin and is supported by a coordination and an advisory council.

The three-day meeting allowed in-depth discussions between citizens and institutions in the Mediterranean on the following topics:

• Thinking about the Mediterranean region
• Citizenship in the Mediterranean, rights and responsibilities
• Creation of a sustainable area of peace: are there any prerequisites?
• The current and future challenges in the Mediterranean : The individual and collective responsibility of citizens

The findings of this first assembly already provide a solid foundation for work and reflection circles existing and future citizens.

This meeting was organized by CERAI, the International European Mouvement and the European University of Tirana with the support of Fondation Charles Léopold Mayer, Casa Mediterráneo et Casa Árabe. The MEDEA Institute provided scientific support to the initiative.

Turning points and challenges in European Islam

An audience of quality came to share the analysis of Professor Dassetto on Islam in Europe. In a context marked by the debate on burqa, and where the term "Islamophobia" is used by the media to reflect a discomfort with Islam, Professor Dassetto explain that there is no " Islamophobia ", but certainly there is a distrust and discomfort regarding that religion. However, Islam in Europe has some important challenges to overcome, including the lack of leadership and leadership training.

Turkey on the path to nuclear
2/3/2010

For the second time, the Midis de la Méditerranée address the topic of energy. After the Roland Kobia’s speech in October on the energy dependence of the EU and its consequences for Euro-Arab relations, Florence Debrouwer, Research Fellow F.R.S. - FNRS, and Member of Study Center on International Crises and Conflicts (CECRI - UCL) explained the evolution of the nuclear ambitions of Turkey since the 50s until today.

Although no project for a nuclear power station is yet signed, Turkey feeds the project since long ago. The failures of the successive drafts are due to various factors, including seismic fault crossing the Anatolian plateau, the unexpected political twists or protests from Turkey neighbours. The audience questions then addressed the role of energy, especially nuclear energy, in the question of Turkish accession to the EU, as well as in regional geopolitics.

The first "Midi de la Méditerranée" in 2010 had the pleasure to receive Professor Sven Biscop, Director of Security and Global Governance at the Egmont Institute. He outlined the European Security Strategy and its special features concerning the Mediterranean. Between a short-term stabilization and the establishment of democracies in the long term, the Mediterranean strategy of the European Union often seems unclear.

The public subsequently questioned the Professor on various subjects such as accession of Turkey to the EU, the innovations introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon or EU’s policy of double standards in de Mediterranean.
